Diana Sterling's mother-in-law Shirley Sterling needs heart surgery. Her son, surgeon Arthur Sterling, abandons her for his first love Chloe Dalton, causing her death. Diana buries Shirley in a sunflower field per her final wish. Chloe and Arthur dig up the grave and scatter ashes. At Arthur's fake funeral, Diana exposes the truth and demands a divorce. Lawyer Gavin Pierce reveals Shirley left everything to Diana. Diana reclaims assets, kicks Chloe out, and sends Chloe's mother to prison. Arthur ends up crippled after Chloe's failed murder-suicide. Three years later, Diana is with Gavin. She encounters Arthur in his mother's hometown; a cold goodbye triggers Arthur's fatal breakdown.
