The Last Call from Bus 17 — Episode 10

The story unfolds in a modern city where the Voss Transport Group is contracted to handle part of the school bus operations. Data regarding vehicle tracking, dispatch, maintenance, accident reporting, and student rosters is fragmented across the private company, the school, and the city’s public safety systems. Although School Bus No. 17 had been officially decommissioned in the system, it was secretly deployed as a replacement vehicle during a torrential downpour, carrying twelve students into the Old River Tunnel. After the brakes failed, Ella repeatedly called for help using both a child-safety mobile phone and the bus's sealed emergency terminal. Her grandmother Margaret, the dispatcher Helen, the school’s transportation supervisor, and the tunnel duty officer each had a chance to verify the situation with a simple check; yet, they deferred to their screens, their preconceptions, or the judgment of the adult who had spoken before them. This collective error delayed the rescue. While all twelve students were eventually pulled from the bus, six-year-old Noah died in the hospital due to oxygen deprivation and the delay in rescue efforts; the other eleven students survived.
